Devan moves for fun
“started skating the streets and learned my city that way. I still see the city as a playground.”
Devan grew up downtown, watching skateboards carve through her Toronto neighbourhood like they belonged there. When she finally got her first board at eight, skating became more than a hobby, it became a way to move through the city with curiosity and joy.
Devan is a downtown kid who moves for fun.
She grew up seeing people skate through her Toronto neighbourhood and wanted in. She begged her mom for a skateboard until her mom finally said yes. Devan got her first board at eight years old, and her mom took her to skate parks where she could start learning the basics, building confidence one attempt at a time.
Skateboarding became a space where fun and creativity mattered more than rules. Devan remembers making it up as she went, especially with friends. “My friend and I would build ramps and make up tricks,” she says, “just having fun.” What she loved most was the feeling of speed. “I loved going fast, that was the coolest thing,” she says.
As she grew, the city became her training ground. Devan took skating out of the park and into the streets, letting wheels and sidewalks teach her Toronto block by block. “I started skating the streets and learned my city that way,” she says. “I still see the city as a playground.”
That mindset follows her beyond home. Devan travels more now, and the skateboard is one of the first things she packs. “Every time I travel somewhere I bring my board,” she says. For her, it changes how a place feels. It makes the unfamiliar more approachable and the ordinary more interesting. “There’s so many more opportunities if you’re a skater,” she says.
Devan also loves how skating can meet people wherever they are. It can be social or solo. It can be a way to explore, a way to reset, or a way to move when motivation feels low. “If you’re bored, go skate,” she says. “You don’t have any friends, go skate. Or you’re being lazy, just go skate, and stay active.”
Her message is simple because her experience is real: skateboarding is freedom on four wheels, and fun is a valid reason to move.
