Devan move for fun

Stepping on my board every day keeps me active, keeps my head straight.
— Devan, 25

Devan is a downtown kid who moves for fun. Growing up in Toronto, she’d watch people flying down the streets on their skateboards — and she knew she had to try it. After months of begging, her mom finally gave in. At eight years old, Devan got her first board and a ticket to freedom.

Her mom took her to skate parks, where she learned the basics of beginner skateboarding and started building her confidence one move at a time. “My friend and I would build ramps and make up tricks,” Devan says. “We were just having fun. I loved going fast — that was the coolest thing. I started skating the streets and learned my city that way. I still see the city as a playground.”

For Devan, street skateboarding is more than a sport — it’s a lifestyle. “Every time I travel, I bring my board,” she says. “If you’re bored — go skate. You don’t have any friends — go skate. Or you’re being lazy — just go skate and stay active. There’s so much you can do with it.”

Skateboarding keeps her grounded, creative, and connected to her city. It’s her way of living an active lifestyle — full of curiosity, energy, and joy.

Devan’s story reminds us that active living inspiration can start anywhere — with one small push, a board, and a sense of freedom.
