Patrick moves for family

When I was 5 years old I was seriously injured in a car accident. I wasn’t supposed to walk again. Running and exercising is a testament to my resilience.
— Patrick, 39

Patrick runs to protect his future self, keeping his body healthy, mobile, and strong for the years ahead. What he does today is deeply personal, because as a child he was told he might never walk again.

Patrick’s relationship with movement has always been about more than fitness. It is about staying healthy, staying mobile, and giving himself the best chance at a strong life later on. “I really want to be healthy in my later years and to not have injuries,” he says.

He started training for sports as a kid, drawn to track and field and the feeling of working toward something tangible. Over time, running became the practice that stayed with him, not only because it builds endurance, but because it clears his mind. “Running sets my mind free,” Patrick says. He describes the pull of it as both physical and emotional. “It’s the combination of appreciating nature and tuning into your body’s physical limits,” he says.

Patrick’s motivation is grounded in the people he loves and the future he hopes to live into. “My kids and family” keep him active, he says. He also pays attention to what aging can bring. Seeing grandparents live with serious physical ailments reminds him that health is not guaranteed and mobility is worth protecting.

He does not do it alone. Patrick credits the people around him, especially the training partners he has at work. “My training partners at work” inspire him, he says, helping him “never miss a workout.” On the days when weather is bad or flu season makes healthy habits harder, that kind of accountability keeps him steady.

The strongest reason behind Patrick’s commitment began long before adulthood. When he was five years old, he was seriously injured in a car accident. He remembers being told he was not supposed to walk again. Today, every run carries that history. “Running and exercising is a testament to my resilience,” he says. “I hope that’s inspiring to others,” he adds.

Patrick runs for health, for family, and for the freedom that comes from being able to move through life on his own terms.
